Florence Nightingale nació el 12 de mayo de 1820 en Florencia, Italia.
Nightingale es considerada una de las pioneras en la práctica de la enfermería, siendo considerada la madre de la enfermería moderna.
Destacó desde muy joven en las matemáticas, y las aplicó posteriormente junto a sus conocimientos de estadística a la epidemiología
Esta mujer se rebeló contra los prejuicios de su época y contra lo que se conocía como la función de la mujer, permanecer en el hogar. Florence logró realizar su sueño de asistir a los enfermos después de enfrentarse a sus padres y familiares; escogió la profesión de enfermera, que por aquel entonces estaba desprestigiada y se reservaba a los pobres, y aunque ser mujer implicaba que Nightingale tenía que luchar contra las autoridades militares a cada paso, fue reformando el sistema hospitalario.
En 1853, tras una recomendación del secretario de Guerra Sydney Hebert, pasó a ser superintendente gracias a ciertos trabajos que realizó en contra de sus inclinaciones a determinados cargos dentro del Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen. Su mayor éxito fue su participación en la guerra de Crimea.
En Crimea contrajo una enfermedad que no la permitió continuar durante mucho más tiempo con su trabajo de enfermera, sin embargo escribió muchos libros, reportes y panfletos sobre el tema.
Florence Nightingale murió en 1910 en Inglaterra.
Florence es un gran referente... la mujer que enalteció la profesión de enfermería.
